Some pictures of scenery I grew up with (large 24-bit jpegs). I use these
pictures as screen
backgrounds on the various systems where I work - they help me remember which
system I am on.
- Tepoztecos. (124k jpeg, 1280x1024) This is
shot from my mother's front yard - the cliffs are 500m tall, and there is a
pyramid on the top (not visible in this picture) reachable with a
picturesque 2-hour walk.
- Cliff. (163k jpeg, 1280x1024). Same cliffs, up close and personal.
- Tlahuac. (157k jpeg, 1152x900) Part of the network
of canals left over when Lake Tezcoco dissapeared. The grayish
dome in the background is Mexico City's smog. The horizon is slightly tilted;
Sorry, I'm standing in a boat and none too stable on my feet.
- Thunderbirds. (91k jpeg, 1152x900) Taken at an air show at
Hanscom Air Force Base.
Interests:
- Cats. In memoriam,
Lynx, 1985-1996.
- Science fiction, mostly hard science fiction and alternate history,
occasional fantasy.
Current favorite authors:
- Science, in particular astrophysics, quantum physics and chemistry.
- Technology, in particular aerospace and medical technologies. Not to
mention computer software and network technologies which are my career.
- History, in particular documentation of long-term trends among
populations and nations. I have a current fascination with the transition
era from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. A study
in the failures of unbridled democracy, the tendency to concentrate power,
and the inertia of a population's way-of-life.
- Geography in any form. Maps are good.
- Work.
